The A+ Certification exam was designed by computing industry experts to certify service technicians in computer hardware and software repair. The course provides students with the knowledge to configure, install, diagnose, repair, upgrade, and maintain microcomputers in preparation of the A+ certification exam. Students spend a significant amount of classroom time conducting hands-on lab work. This course is designed for students who are interested in a career in the information technology field.

Agriculture Occupations Program
Students in the Agriculture Occupations Program cover topics such as animal science, crop production, horticulture, landscaping, marketing, and natural resources. Students are able to expand their leadership skills through participation in FFA activities offered during the year. This program also provides the opportunity to enroll in hands-on job experiences in the area of agribusiness or production agriculture.

The Auto Mechanics Program exposes students to the many service and diagnostic procedures in this exciting and rapidly changing industry. Students receive a variety of instruction ranging from automotive technology to hands-on experience in the automotive service field. These programs emphasize the skill to troubleshoot or diagnose, to repair today’s cars and light trucks, and to perform preventative maintenance on these vehicles. Students gain knowledge in electronics and computers that is necessary to meet today’s technical advances in the automotive industry.

Computer networking is a rapidly growing technical field with many opportunities for employment. Networking technicians study, design, install and maintain the systems which allow computers to talk to each other. The six courses offered over six quarters will lead to the opportunity to take a certification test offered by Cisco Systems. Holders of the CCNA(Cisco Certified Networking Associate) will have many opportunities for future employment.

Construction trades and their related activities comprise a large and important element of the national economy. In Construction Trades, students participate in this industry by constructing a 1500 square foot, single family home, from framing to interior and exterior finishing. Students learn safety rules, regulations, and specific skills for handling and using all hand tools and electric equipment, and they use these skills in the completion of a number of remodeling projects. Through this program students gain experience and knowledge in the area of home maintenance and develop a sense of what to look for when buying a home.

This course is an introduction to cosmetology. Students develop practical skills necessary for entry-level salon work and hours toward certification at a post-secondary cosmetology school. Topics include process of communication, sanitation, Minnesota laws and rules, skin care, manicuring, chemistry of hair, haircutting, hairstyling, chemical control, hair coloring and retailing. Students also learn proper techniques for using shears, texturizing tools, razor, and electric clippers.

The security needs of today’s world have created a new career demand. Preparation of the various professionals dealing with these concerns will be the subjects addressed in this program. The program is designed for students interested in becoming probation or police officers, crime scene investigators, as well as, many other law enforcement careers at the local, state and national levels. This course provides students with an introduction to the criminal justice/law enforcement field. The institutions of police, courts and corrections will be studied as to how they protect people and their rights, apprehend law violators, prevent crime and provide social services. Students will have the opportunity to become CPR certified and proficient in first-aid.

Graphic Communications Program
Graphic Communications is Minnesota’s second largest industry. In the Graphic Communications Program students are presented with the basic steps involved in producing a printed piece by the offset printing process. Students work through the processes of computer layout and design, copy preparation, film image assembly, proofing, platemaking, press and bindery operations. In addition, they learn screen printing, multi-media computer applications, desktop video, and obtain Internet experience. This course is designed primarily as a hands-on learning experience, supplemented by assignments from curriculum materials/textbook.
Graphic Communications II is an advanced program that expands on areas previously learned through individual work and small group activities. Students focus on advanced competencies of the printing industry and have the opportunity to create their own curriculum. They may also participate in industry internships and/or apprenticeships.

Healthcare Careers – Career Exploration and Core Curriculum
This course offers a first-hand look at the skills and competencies needed to work in healthcare, providing information about the different types of healthcare career opportunities. Education, licensure, certification and pathways for career advancement are explored. The class encompasses guest lectures, tours of healthcare facilities and a job shadow. Focus is on the skills that would be required of anyone working in a healthcare setting such as: communication skills, legal issues, client and staff diversity, awareness and sensitivity to client needs, healthcare ethics and safety and standard precautions.

Mentor Connection/Mentor I Programs
Mentor Connection allows high school juniors and seniors to independently pursue an academic interest under the guidance of a mentor. Students have the opportunity to learn beyond the boundaries of the high school curriculum, to raise awareness of education and career options, and to be assisted in making career-related decisions. Mentor Connection students develop their own learning plans with the help of the Mentor Connection instructor. Application and selection take place in the spring for the following academic year.
Mentor I is a mentoring experience similar to Mentor Connection, available to high ability students. In Chaska, 7th through 10th grade students are eligible. In Shakopee, Mentor I serves 9th grade students. Application and selection take place in the spring for the following academic year.

The Photography Program is designed to teach both the technical and artistic sides of the field of photography. Students learn the skills necessary to develop black and white film and prints, and the use of digital photography processes. Amajor emphasis is placed on hands-on learning. Students assemble a personal portfolio to demonstrate their skill.

Registered Youth Apprenticeships are available to high school juniors and seniors, age 16 or older, who have demonstrated an interest in construction trades, graphic communications and medical careers. Additional apprenticeship areas will be developed in the near future. PREREQUISITE: Must have taken the related Career and Technical program.

With support from United Way, CSEC has a system for volunteer recruitment, training, and referral. Currently, community members and college students volunteer time mentoring pregnant and parenting teens, or high school students in careers, as teachers’ aides in a variety of settings, and as tutors in after-school homework assistance programs.
